Palmetto Pocket Park Project Aims to Transform Empty Downtown Lot

A vacant lot is moving toward a new purpose.

Published Apr 15, 2026

A local effort is underway to turn a vacant lot in downtown Palmetto into a temporary pocket park, giving people a place to gather while long-term plans for the property continue.

The site has sat quiet for years, and the goal is to bring fresh energy back to that part of downtown.

The project, called 10th Ave Grove, is being led by Palmetto Downtown Main Street.

What’s planned for the space

The transformation is expected to take 30 to 60 days and cost about $10,000. Plans include seating, shaded areas, and open space that can be used throughout the week.

The design is intentionally simple, so the space can support different uses without a major buildout. Organizers have also mentioned the potential for small gatherings, casual performances, and local pop-ups once the park is in place.

Here’s a look at the site and what’s planned, including interviews with the people behind the project:

Why this lot?

The location has been part of the conversation in Palmetto for years. Because of its visibility, it remains an important piece of downtown, and in its current condition, it leaves a noticeable gap.

Turning it into a usable space would bring activity to the area right away while the property moves through its next phase. It would also give nearby businesses a chance to benefit from more foot traffic.

Karon Dixon, executive director of Palmetto Downtown Main Street, explained the goal behind the project:

We’re trying to help revitalize the area, improve walkability, bring people downtown, and give them a reason to come in, stay awhile, and support downtown businesses,” Dixon said.

Community support and contributions

Organizers are encouraging residents, businesses, and local organizations to contribute through donations, materials, and volunteer help as the project moves forward.

Donations can be made through the project’s fundraising page.

Those who take part will have a role in shaping how the space comes together, turning the vacant lot into a place the community can use and recognize as their own.

That involvement could also have an impact on nearby businesses. Lillian Gleitsman, who works at D’s in downtown Palmetto, shared how the park could affect the area:

“It will bring in a lot more people for us and a lot more people would be fed and have a good time enjoying the park. They can come over, have a bite and go right back,” Gleitsman said.

The call for support remains open as work on the space continues over the next several weeks.

What comes next

Work on the site is expected to begin soon, with the goal of opening the space within the next couple of months. As construction moves forward, updates are expected on how the space will be used and what events may be introduced.

For now, the focus remains on building out the park and continuing to gather support from the community as it takes shape. Follow Palmetto Downtown Main Street on Facebook for updates.
